Eric Hurlocker, In Memoriam

Eric Hurlocker, Co-Founding Partner Emeritus

Eric Hurlocker was a champion of renewable energy technology and investment, and co-founder of GreeneHurlocker. For over thirty years, he focused on advising clients involved in energy and, for nearly fifteen years, renewable energy transactions. Eric became the preeminent renewable energy lawyer in Virginia, with no major renewable energy project in the Commonwealth happening without his involvement during the height of his career.

When Eric co-founded GreeneHurlocker in 2012, he had a clear vision: to build a team of excellent lawyers who were not only skilled, but also family-oriented, selfless, and fun to be around. He believed that if the firm’s lawyers could achieve this balance, they would make a real difference in their field while enjoying the work they did. Eric led by example, demonstrating how to run a successful business, be a first-class lawyer, and be fully present for his family.

Eric’s practice took him to negotiating tables and boardrooms across the country, where his brilliance, creativity, and ability to connect with everyone helped him close deal after deal. His work on solar energy projects, including the pioneering solar project at the University of Richmond that served as a model for others across Virginia and beyond, grew and reshaped the entire industry. When he retired from the firm in 2023, he received several lifetime achievement awards including the Virginia Renewable Energy Alliance (VA-REA) Leadership Award for Career Achievement and the CHESSA Solar Visionary Award.

Eric was born and raised in Central Pennsylvania. He and his wife, Andi, shared a partnership full of love, humor, and mutual respect that began when they were childhood sweethearts. Together they raised two children, Jay and Laynie, and Eric – always true to his word – never missed a moment with them.

Eric’s love for the University of Richmond, where he attended college and law school, was legendary among friends and colleagues. His enthusiastic support for the school’s basketball and football teams was matched only by his pride in establishing the GreeneHurlocker Scholarship Fund at the UR Law School, which encourages students with diverse backgrounds to enter energy and environmental law careers.

Eric passed away in 2025 after a courageous battle with cancer. His legacy teaches us that a person can lift those around them through love, kindness, humor, and hard work while remaining humble and generous. His pioneering work in renewable energy and dedication to his clients continue to inspire the firm’s mission and values.
